James Lee Ferrell MD
Dr. James L. Ferrell, Jimmy Lee, died peacefully in his home on September 18, 2016 after a 7 month battle with lymphoma. He was 82 years young.
Dr. Ferrell was born in Ashland, Kentucky on January 28, 1934, son of Walter Lee and Bessie Marcum Ferrell who preceded him in death. His only sibling, Walter Marcum Ferrell, preceded him in death.
Dr. Ferrell is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith Bernice Ferrell; 4 children, Roberta Lynn Allison (Bruce), Bonnie Lee Ferrell (Di), David Neil Ferrell (Malinda), and Holly Jo Sprackling (Jack); 8 grandchildren, Tyler Allison (Leah), Ryan Sprackling (Angela), Jonathon Ferrell, Elijah Neymark, Thomas Ferrell, Marcelle Sprackling, Gabriel Neymark, and Glory Ferrell; 2 step grandchildren, Ryann Bicknell and Avery Davis; 2 great grandchildren, Alexandra and Jacob Allison; and many extended family members who considered him a mentor and friend.
Dr. Ferrell spent much of his youth in Ceredo/Kenova, West Virginia. He attended VMI from 1951 to 1954 in preparation for medical school. He received a Bachelor of Science in medicine from West Virginia University College of Medicine in 1956 and his Medical Doctorate from the Medical College of Virginia in 1958. He served as an Active Duty officer for the United States Public Health Services with the Coast Guard in Boston, Massachusetts (1958 to 1959) and San Juan, Puerto Rico (1959 to 1961).
In 1961, Jim and Judy moved to Paris, Kentucky with 2 children and a strong desire to become a part of their community. Dr. Ferrell practiced medicine in Paris from 1961 to 2013. During that time he served his community as a physician, leader, and friend to many people. He enjoyed all of his memberships and terms as officers constantly working to improve not only medical care, but also all aspects of health and well-being in our community.
As a physician, Dr. Ferrell, became a University of Kentucky Family Practice Department Volunteer Faculty Professor and Community Medicine Assistant Professor in 1965. He was a member of the following organizations throughout his 52 year career; Kentucky Medical Association serving as the District Trustee, Kentucky Academy of Family Practice, The Physicians Network (TPN) serving as President, the American Academy of Family Practice, and a Charter Fellow of the American Board of Family Practice.
In Bourbon County he was instrumental in the medical direction of both the hospital and Bourbon Heights as he practiced in these facilities and served on their boards for many years. He was the Medical Director of Bourbon Heights for 42 years retiring in 2013, established the Bourbon Medical Center in 1963, was a staff member of Bourbon County Hospital for 52 years and served as the Bourbon County Hospital Management Change Medical Staff President. He also served as a President, Secretary/Treasurer, and long term member of the Bourbon County Medical Society, on the Bourbon County Health Department Board, as well as the Paris High School and Bourbon County High School team physicians.
As a servant of the community, he was a member and served on the board of many organizations and fellowships that were important to him. They include: The First Presbyterian Church serving as a Deacon and Elder, the Kiwanis Club where he served multiple terms as an officer, a YMCA Board Member serving as President, a Kentucky Bank Board Member, the Kentucky Bank Chairman of the Board, the Kentucky Bank Trust Department Chairman, the Shriner Oleika Temple, and Paris Lodge #2 Free and Accepted Masons.
Dr. Ferrell was an avid tennis player participating in multiple tennis tournaments every year including qualifying to represent the State of Kentucky in the Senior Games multiple times. He enjoyed captaining his own houseboat at Cave Run Lake for many years along with a small fleet of supporting vessels. As time progressed, he preferred a jet-ski and pontoon.
He enjoyed traveling to Colorado for annual ski trips, Hilton Head, South Carolina, and many other beautiful places including many of our National Parks. He returned with his family to Puerto Rico in January to celebrate his and Judy’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.
Visitation will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Paris, Kentucky on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, from 4 pm to 8 pm. The Memorial Service will be at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 4 pm.
Dr. Ferrell shared his love of life and humor with everyone in the community. We know that many of you have your story to share about him and we want to honor each of them. There will be a box available for you to leave your written story at the Visitation and the Memorial Service.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Paris-Bourbon County YMCA or the First Presbyterian Church of Paris.
