Obituary for Sally Woodford Hinkle (Spears)

Sally Woodford Hinkle (Spears)
Sally Woodford Spears Hinkle, daughter of the late Catesby Woodford Spears and Sallie Lockhart Spears, died peacefully at her Hidaway Farm home on October 15 at age 93. Sally’s roots and life were firmly planted in Paris and Bourbon County. She grew up on her parents’ farm, Stoneleigh, and received her early education at the Paris City Schools. She graduated from high school at the National Cathedral School in Washington, DC and attended Hollins College, but returned home after her father’s death to graduate with a degree in history from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Thomas Clark was her favorite professor. During World War II she was a volunteer nurses’ aide at local hospitals. In June 1947 she married Buckner Hinkle and they settled permanently at Hidaway, where they raised three sons and built a legacy based on love and respect for family, hospitality to friends, and appreciation for heritage and the land. Her sons – Buckner Hinkle, Jr. (Anne), Henry Lockhart Hinkle (Barbara) and Thomas Spears Hinkle (Lisa) - survive her along with ten grandchildren: Sally Brown Thilman (Ted), Dr. Lucy Lloyd (Jonathon), Mary Grace Hinkle, Henry Lockhart Hinkle Jr., William J. Hinkle (Kerri), Buckner Hinkle II, Thomas Spears Hinkle Jr., Anne Archer Hinkle (Farley Stephenson), Emily Hord and Jane Lyle Ghaelian (John). She is also survived by six great-grandchildren (Caroline Lockhart Thilman, Edward Thomas Thilman IV, Mary Reynolds Lloyd, Margaret Thornbury Lloyd, Jameson O'Nan Jennings Hinkle and Maxwell Spears Hinkle), her sister Catesby (“Pat”) Spears Simpson, numerous nieces and nephews and Joy Thornbury Hinkle and Melinda Mahaffey Hinkle. In addition to her parents and husband, Buck, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lockhart Spears, and a granddaughter, Caroline Spears Hinkle. To her family and many friends she was “Sal”, a kind, generous and unpretentious soul devoted to family, friends, church and community. Never one to call attention to herself, Sal had a strong sense of faith, charity and civic duty that benefited numerous individuals and organizations, including St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Historic Paris- Bourbon County, the Hopewell Museum and the Paris- Bourbon County Library. She played golf, tennis and bridge avidly and well until age took its measure. But even age did not slow her down before her early 90’s, as she was always on the go with purpose. When slowed in the final years, she retained an inquiring and beneficent interest in the family, friends and causes at the center of her life. Sal’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers and companions: Michelle Johnson, Tara Daughtery, Rosie McDonald, Judy Blankenship, Sue Ratliff, Grace Bailey, Ann Heron, Cindi Breeze and Kim Bowman. Arrangements are under the direction of Hinton-Turner. Visitation will be at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on October 17 at 5:00 PM. Funeral services will be at St. Peter’s on October 18 at 11:00 A.M. followed by internment at the Paris Cemetery. Sal's grandsons and grandsons-in-law will serve as active pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers will be N. E. Blackwell, Thomas M. Brannock, Donald Chestnut, Catesby Clay, William M. Cress, James C. Codell III, Jimmie A. Florence, Richard B. Ledford, Joe McClain, Estill C. Pennington and her nephews: Boone Baldwin, Sayre Combs, Miller Hoffman, Laurance Simpson, Lockhart Simpson, Matthew Simpson, Thomas Spears and Thomas Stephens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Sal’s memory to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Paris-Bourbon County YMCA or the Hopewell Museum.
